ICELANDIC outfit IFK Keflavik edged closer to a dream date with Newcastle in the Intertoto Cup when they progressed from the first round at the expense of Northern Ireland's Dungannon Swifts following a goalless draw in
Belfast.

Keflavik were 4-1 up from the first leg in their own stadium last week, and any hopes the Swifts had of turning the tie around were effectively ended 10 minutes before the break when midfielder Darren Murphy was sent off after an off-the-ball incident.

Neither side managed to break the deadlock in Belfast's Windsor Park, so it was the Icelandics who went through into the second round, where they will face Lillestrom of Norway.

The first leg of that tie will be next Saturday, July 1, with the return a week later. Newcastle await the winners the following weekend at St. James' Park, with the away game taking place the weekend after (July 22).

Intertotocupen

LSK skal denne sommeren delta i Intertotocupen. For mange av dere er denne cupen et nytt bekjentskap, men dette er faktisk den åttende gangen LSK deltar i Intertotocupen.

Intertotocupen ble startet i 1967, og fram til og med 1994 var dette rene tippekamper, sponset av tippeselskapene ute i Europa. Mange klubber brukte dette som en del av oppkjøringen til sesongen, samtidig som tippeselskapene fikk fyllt opp tippekupongene sine.

Fra og med 1995 har Intertotocupen fungert som kvalifisering til UEFA-cupen. LSK var nære ved å vinne gruppa si i 1996, men tapte den siste og avgjørende kampen hjemme mot Nantes.

I år er turneringen omstrukturert, slik at det er 11 lag som går videre til UEFA-cupen, i motsetning til stusselige 3 lag i fjor. Antall runder er redusert til 3, og LSK kommer inn i 2. runde. Vinneren av de 11 3. runde-kampene kommer inn i 2. kvalifiseringsrunde i UEFA-cupen, der fjorårets cupvinner, Molde, også kommer inn. De andre norske lagene (Start, Lyn og Brann) kommer inn i 1. kvalifiseringsrunde.

Om LSK skal kvalifisere seg for det relativt gjeve gruppespillet i UEFA-cupen, må de gjennom hele fire runder (åtte kamper). Her er en oversikt over hvilke typer lag vi kan komme til å møte:

2. runde i Intertotocupen: Her møter vi Keflavik fra Island. Dette er et lag som sånn omtrentlig holder norsk 1. divisjonsstandard.

3. runde i Intertotocupen: Om vi slår Keflavik møter vi engelske Newcastle. Dette er et lag som skal være mye bedre enn LSK, men pga en del omstendigheter har LSK helt klart en mulighet for å gå videre.

2. kvalifiseringsrunde i UEFA-cupen: Om vi slår Newcastle vil vi møte et lag som mest sannsynlig er en del dårligere her. Kanskje en mellomting mellom Keflavik og Newcastle.

1. runde i UEFA-cupen: Her møter vi nesten garantert god motstand, omtrent på nivået til Newcastle. F.eks. møtte Tromsø Galatasaray i denne runden i fjor, men som vi husker, vant samelaget etter en dramatisk kamp i Tyrkia.

Det blir selvsagt vanskelig, men det er en mulighet for at vi kan klare å komme til gruppespillet i UEFA-cupen. Moro blir det nok uansett!

Det som er litt spennende er at LSK har lavest mulig seeding ut fra norske lag sammen med f.eks. Start og Brann. Og dersom alle favorittene går videre så ser vi at Start havner i seeda pulje, mens Brann havner i useeda pulje. Det går sikkert på rang i forhold hvordan de kom inn i cupen. Brann har nok også høyere rang enn oss. Slår vi ut Newcastle så vil vi da gå inn i den useeda gruppa, mens Brann går opp og tar den ledige plassen (som var tiltenkt Newcastle) i seeding-gruppa. Husk at vi ikke kan møte norske lag. Dermed står vi igjen med disse mulige motstanderne:

Vi ser at rankingen til alle disse fem laga er svakere enn for vårt LSK.
Dermed holder det at bare ett av disse laga overrasker og slår et høyere ranka lag. Da vil LSK rykke opp fra beste useeda lag og rett over i seeda gruppe. Dette gjør at jeg kan vurdere mine odds for å gå helt til gruppespill på nytt.

Men egentlig tror jeg Newcastle gir fullstendig faen i disse teoriene.

Oppdatert og (litt optimistisk) odds for å komme til gruppespillet i UEFA-cupen:

0,95 (Sjansen for å slå ut Keflavik/Dungannon) * 0,25 (Sjansen for å slå ut Newcastle) * 0,7 * 0,15 = ca. 2 prosent.

Siden det nå ser ut til å være størst odds for at vi blir seeda i UEFA-cupens kvalifisering (vårt tredje hinder) så har jeg økt sjansen fra 40 prosent til 70 prosent på å gå videre. Og da øker sjansen fra 1 prosent tidligere, til 2 prosent nå.

Norwegians strong favourites

Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder and Chief Scout David Mills were in Norway on Saturday, as the two teams vying to meet us in this season's Intertoto Cup went head to head for the first time.
The Magpies delegation were at the Arasen Stadium where home side Lillestrøm beat the Icelandics of Keflavik 4-1, thanks to goals from Bjorn Helge Riise (26), Kasey Wehrman (pictured) (35 & 54) and Magnus Myklebust (90).
Keflavik's Stefan Orn Arnarson had got one back for the Icelandics just before half -time.

Our man in the ground tells us that the Norwegians rested four first team regulars and won at a canter.

After the game Glen Roeder spoke to TV Romerike and said of Lillestrøm that they were:

"very, very fit, it was a hot day today but they have a lot of players that showed a lot of energy.

""If we're not mindful and respectful of the kind of quality Lillestrøm possesses, then they certainly can cause us problems.

Speaking about his own squad:

"The boys are in training every day, they know the importance of this competition, and we're very much looking forward to it".

Sunday week (9th) sees the second leg of the tie which will be played in Iceland at Keflavik's Keflavíkurvöllur Stadium at 2pm local time.

The winners face Newcastle in the Third Round in a 5pm KO at SJP on Saturday 15th July, with the return leg on Saturday 22nd July.

Magpies are concerned over Ameobi

Ameobi is "touch and go" for the first game, according to Roeder

Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder is sweating on the fitness of striker Shola Ameobi ahead of the start of their Intertoto Cup campaign on 15 July.

With Alan Shearer retired and Michael Owen injured, Roeder's forward options for the tie are limited to Ameobi, Albert Luque and James Milner.

However, Ameobi, 24, is yet to resume training because of a hip problem.

"He had an injection last week - as far as 15 July's concerned, he's touch and go," Roeder told the Evening Chronicle.

"If he doesn't return to training next week, it would be asking a lot for him to play."

SHOLA Ameobi is touch and go for Newcastle United's Intertoto Cup opener.

Ameobi is yet to start training following an injection to cure his troublesome hip problem, and manager Glenn Roeder will not throw him in against either Lillestrom or Keflavik on July 15 if there are any doubts about his fitness.

Roeder – who goes into the season with just Ameobi, Albert Luque and James Milner to choose from up front – is hoping the 24-year-old can return to training early next week.

And that would give Ameobi – who had been pencilled in for an operation last month – an outside chance of featuring in what would be his 38th European tie.
"Shola only had an injection two weeks ago, and unfortunately he's been unable to return to training," said Roeder. "He's near to returning, and hopefully he will early next week.

"What he's feeling is a little bit of needle soreness because of the probing around they did to get the right spot. He's still feeling sore where the needle went in.

"We were hoping he could return on Wednesday with the others, but he wasn't able to because of the pain.

"At the moment he's in the physio room working on other things, and as far as July 15 I'd have to say he's touch and go.

"If he doesn't return next week it would be asking a lot for him to play. We'd be asking him to go into a full-blooded game with just 10 days training under his belt."

Ameobi – the club's third-top scorer in Europe – has long been troubled by his hip, and had an operation last summer.

The pain returned last season and Ameobi was facing up to another operation, only for a scan to show that the problem could be sorted by a single injection.

Roeder has erred on the side of caution with injuries and fitness since succeeding Graeme Souness, a policy he believes passionately about.

And despite his lack of striking resources, he will not take any chances with his players.

He said: "The fitness coach Paul Winsper wanted to return on July 1, but I pulled it forward to June 28 because I felt we needed 17 days training.

"That should be enough for the players if they don't miss any days.

But if players miss any it becomes virtually impossible for them to perform – the human body won't allow it and we must understand that.

"After seven weeks off you can't just put someone through a game of football at this level, and I sometimes get annoyed when people don't understand fitness.

"There's a minimum amount of time that a player needs, and any manager who plays someone who is injured needs their head examined."

Rob lee has told Newcastle United not to blow their chance of European glory by making sure they get past the InterToto Cup stage of their continental mission.

Should United successfully see off IBK Keflavik or Lillestrom in the third and final round of the competition next weekend, a place in the UEFA Cup second qualifying stage will be theirs.

Lee, who played in the competition with United in 2001, wants the Magpies to grasp their opportunity.

The ex-Newcastle favourite said today: "The InterToto has been criticised in the past, but it can be worthwhile if you can get through.

"I think if it gets Newcastle into the UEFA Cup then it has certainly been worthwhile - Europe is the place to be.


"Newcastle fans would have accepted this chance back in February but now the players have to take the chance.

"I remember playing in it a few years ago and, providing you don't burn out too early, you actually look forward to playing what I call proper matches, rather than friendlies."

The former United midfield maestro (above) netted a hat-trick of headers against Royal Antwerp in Belgium in his first ever game in a foreign competition.

He added: "I loved it and every player does because Europe is so different.

"That's because you really get the chance to test yourself against teams with different systems, tactics and different atmospheres.

"I know that the players will probably have a little whinge when they come back early, but if they do make the UEFA Cup then nobody will be complaining.

"Newcastle have to be in Europe, it is actually a necessity for them.

"Obviously winning the UEFA Cup means that you are ready to move on to Champions League football - or at least good enough - but I think any cup will do for Newcastle.

Han blir neppe spilleklar for ut på nyåret.
Newcastle-spilleren skadet korsbåndet i det første minuttet av VM-oppgjøret mot Sverige.

Han fløy tidligere i uka til USA hvor han ble undersøkt av spesialisten Richard Steadman. Det viser seg at en kneoperasjon er nødvendig, og dermed blir det ytterligere to måneders opphold fra fotballen.

Den tidligere Liverpool-spilleren mistet mye av forrige sesong på grunn av beinbrudd. Han fikk kun med seg 11 seriekamper (sju mål) for Newcastle etter overgangen fra Real Madrid for ett år siden.

Roeder hoping Ameobi's rapid recovery continues

SHOLA AMEOBI has given Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder a fitness boost at a time when little progress has been made on the transfer front.
The Magpies are just ten days away from their first Intertoto Cup game, likely to be with Norwegian side Lillestrom, and there is a danger they could have no recognised striker available.

However, Ameobi has shown encouraging signs in training this week and is ready to step up his bid to return to full fitness after a troublesome hip injury.

Newcastle are desperate to have the 24-year-old back in the thick of things as they are yet to find a replacement for the retired Alan Shearer, while Michael Owen is out for several months with his cruciate knee ligament injury.
That means only James Milner and Albert Luque are options for Roeder in the third round, first leg of the Intertoto Cup next week if Ameobi doesn't come through.

But the Newcastle boss is quietly confident the gangly forward, who has failed to realise his potential on Tyneside under previous managers, will be ready for next weekend.

"Shola has been jogging and is now in with a shout," said Roeder. "He has started to get back running again and is working hard on the training ground but he is still a few days behind the rest of the lads."

Roeder's need to have Ameobi fit is more urgent due to the fact he has failed to add to his attacking options this summer.

Charlton's Darren Bent is the man Roeder would love to bring to St James' Park but the Addicks are refusing to budge on their £10m asking price.

And there is a growing acceptance that there will not be any new recruits on board before either Lillestrom or Keflavik arrive on Tyneside a week on Saturday.
Roeder had hoped to have signed one or two new players ahead of that opening game but it would seem most of the transfer activity will occur after that date.

Glenn Roeder says he is refusing to jeopardise Newcastle United's European chances by playing a Reserve side in the Intertoto Cup.

World Cup players Jean-Alain Boumsong and Craig Moore are yet to train with the squad for obvious reasons, but the Toon gaffa says he will go for a full strength side to make it through to the UEFA Cup.

Lillestrom are favourites to stand in our way, after the Norwegians won 4-1 in their first-leg tie over Icelandic side Keflavik. The first leg will be on July 15 at St James's Park, with the return the following weekend.

Ex-Manchester City striker Uwe Rosler, now manager of Lillestrom, rested four players for last Saturday's game.

Roeder: 'The Intertoto Cup is very important to us because it offers us a route into the UEFA Cup. Having worked so hard to earn the chance at the end of last season we have to make sure our preparations are thorough and we don't waste the opportunity.

'Lillestrom were full value for their victory and although there is still a second leg to play, they will be favourites to finish off the job next weekend. I wanted to have a close look at our potential opposition at close hand.'

Aussie midfield schemer Kasey Wehrman produced a superb European performance as he helped Lillestrom to a 4-1 Intertoto Cup victory over Iceland's Keflavik this week.

Wehrman struck twice and walked away with the man-of-the-match award in the first-leg clash. If Lillestrom can keep their nerve in Iceland, the Norwegians will set themselves up for a glamour showdown with Premiership giants Newcastle United.


Watching Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder saw Wehrman produced a man-of-the match performance with two goals, including a gem of a free-kick ten minutes before half-time to add to Bjorn Helge Riise's opener.
